During the 20^th century it could be argued that Polaroid were the driving force in creative photography, making cameras and films that produced images instantly, with no developing or scanning required. These were things that Fuji and Kodak could only dream of. However, the dawn of digital proved that such technology was no longer required as all photography now became instant. The company went bust, twice, and ended up putting its name on anything from TVs to Sunglasses just to make money. This, seemingly, sounded the death knell for instant photography.

A decade or so ago most people in the photographical world declared analogue [film] photography to be dead. It was the digital revolution and anything that wasn’t developing at a rate of knots risked being left behind and forgotten about. Most of the large film manufacturers like; FujiFilm, Kodak and AGFA had given up developing new and exciting types of film as they were busy trying to come up with amazing digital cameras. Today, Fuji and Kodak still make film, but will probably never bring out a brand new kind of film again, it just isn’t worth it, they have seen what happened to Polaroid and don’t want to go the same way.

Digital photography opens the doors to a world of creativity and ease. With a digital camera (compact or DSLR), a laptop and a copy of Photoshop anyone can be a landscape, portrait, street or reportage photographer. Best of all, if you don’t get the shot right first time you can take it over and over again until you do. It could be argued that this form of ‘practice makes perfect’ photography is the best way to develop a photographical eye, turning complete novices into pro’s over a period of time. There is also the reduced, relatively speaking, cost of digital photography. The camera may be expensive to buy in the first place, but there are no developing, scanning, or printing costs to worry about. In fact, unless you buy extra lenses and accessories you may never have to pay anything extra during the lifetime of your camera.

Digital photography has a downside however, it is stale, clinical and without wonder and excitement. With a digital camera you don’t get the anticipation of picking up your photos from the lab and seeing what has come out, because by looking at you’re LCD screen you already know. The method of taking the same picture 50 times to get it right seems a bit like cheating, with film you get one chance to get it right, you have to judge it and really think “Is this going to look good?”

Sure film and processing can be pricey, but cameras can be bought for pocket money prices. Last generation film SLR’s by Nikon and Canon can be bought for as little as £10 in second hand and charity stores. Though, the real sign that film is still very much alive and kicking is the popularity of brands like Lomography and The Impossible Project.

Lomography started in the mid 90’s as just a few friends from Austria going mad for a little Russian camera found in a second hand store in the Czech capital, Prague. Now they are a multinational brand, designing and manufacturing a whole host of mad and creative cameras and films. Their Facebook page alone has almost 290,000 fans, compared to Nikon’s 175,000. People go mad for their cameras, and the wacky effects that they produce. Lomography claim that seeing the world through the viewfinder of an analogue camera opens your eyes to parts of your every- day life you may have never seen before. This is something digital can never achieve as it is too easy to just push the shutter button and snap the same city streets day in day out, and missing that funny coloured doorway, or the beggar that has sat in it for years, or way the cobbles sit, or the retro street lamps.

The IMPOSSIBLE Project was born out of necessity. In 2008 Polaroid finally announced it would be stopping production of all their instant films, meaning that every camera out there became defunct, relics of a by-gone era. Members of the Polaroid staff, led by artist and businessman Dr. Florian Kaps bought out the film factory at Enschede, near Amsterdam in Holland and set out to develop and produce new films for SX-70 and 600 format cameras, as well as selling refurbished Polaroid cameras. The company has stores in New York City, Vienna and Tokyo, as well a factory outlet at the facility in Enschede. On May 6^th this year, IMPOSSIBLE finally did the ‘impossible’ and released a colour instant film for 600 format cameras, saving users the expense of buying expired and wildly over priced Polaroid film on eBay.

Ultimately, digital is convenient, it serves a purpose, it does a job and it does it well, but that’s it. There’s no fun to digital photography, simply put, it’s just there. No life. No soul. Film on the other hand will always give images a life and soul. It makes taking a picture an experience, not just an action. From loading the film, choosing and framing a subject, pushing the shutter button, winding and unloading the film right through to processing it, each picture tells a story and captures a moment. One chance, one shot and no two are the same.

I bought my first lomo camera just before i went travelling, so around 3 years now!
2) Why do you enjoy using lomography cameras?
they are fun, creative, different and you can just snap all the time. there are no rules!
3)What cameras do you own?
Diana Mini, action sampler and fish eye.

A relaxed creative way to photograph anything, anywhere, anytime, anyone.
5) Do you have any useful tips for first time users of lomography cameras?
Do not expect to be an expert first time round, especially with dianas…they take a while to get used too. just don’t give up!
6)If you could have only one lomography camera which one would it be and why?Diana, love the colours, love the fact you can have 2 images in one from, over lay images etc etc. Its by far the best. and i love how it fits in my handbag!

7) What’s your favourite technique to use and why?
Overlaying images, rewind the film and snap over previous ones.
How did you feel when you first received your first developed film?

excited but nervous, had no idea how they were going to turn out. when i picked it up i was surprised how many worked, and how many didn’t! but the ones that did work were wicked, was really happy with them. since then, i haven’t stopped snapping.
